" Shuklam baradaram vishnum sashivarnam chaturbhujam Prasannavadanam dhyayet sarva vighno' pashantaye" This simple shloka in anushtup meter ( a very common sanskrit meter consisting of 4 sections of 8 syllables each ) is the 1st hymn of the mighty Sri Visnu Sahasranama ,the thousand names of Lord Vishnu. In Hinduism, the sahasranama is a very popular hymn-form in which the countless divine and benificient traits of a god or goddess are distilled into a simple thousand to be enumerated. All of the numerous devatas have Sahasranama hymns written by devotees. For instance , there is the Lalita Sahasranama , the Siva Sahasranama , Devi Saharanama , etc. However, when one refers to "The Sahasranama" it is understood that it is the Sri Vishnu Sahasranama alone that they are speaking of ; such is the universal popularity of this hymn. Shuklam baradaram vishnum , wearing a white garment and pervading all; shashivarnam chaturbhujam , having four arms and a countenance like the still moon ; prassavadanam dhyayet, having also a smiling face, we meditate on you ; sarva vighno' pashantaye , and pray to you to remove all obstacles. The Point Grey area of Vancouver is the location of several impressive estates . The view from this vantage point of the ocean on a clear day is awe inspiring ; and with its proximity to the University , the area is guaranteed to be bordered by a protected forest.
My associate & I had a meeting with a prospective client at their job-site in the area last week. It was an interesting meeting, as initially the project's construction was being rushed in order to accommodate the visit to Vancouver of his guru from India.
The client's wife is originally from India as well, and she was very gracious in saying that she would have offered us Chai , if the kitchen had been functioning at the location we were in. Their company is one of the leading privately owned and family operated organic food companies in North America. He walked us through the job-site to show us his patch of organic garden where he had grown & harvested very juicy looking tomatoes & cucumbers.
I appreciate this insight he had to share in a recent interview on Treehugger : " We live in very challenging times. The current crisis willl pass, like clouds that briefly cover the sun We will endeavor to grow despite the doom & gloom on Wall St. , & hopefully our actions will help improve our spheres of influence . " Very yogic & inspiring indeed ; & that is why his family is blessed.
Here is Tatiane's So Ham blog post on my Brazilian Yoga Teacher experience "em Portuges" :
Dharma Mittra é o melhor professor brasileiro!
Todas as aulas
destes professores brasileiros tinham profundidade, tradição e fluidez.
respeitam a filosofia clássica da Yoga e usam a língua sânscrita
intensamente em suas aulas. A fluidez e a profundidade do estilo
I was introduced to Yoga Gives Back and its founders at a benefit where a couple of my teachers participated in last month.
It is truly INSPIRING when Tatiane R. does a feature post on the project via her blog So Ham . ( Please use the translator on the right side ) .
" The project aims to give back ( utilizing a micro-credit program ) to the needy population of the birthplace of the system that has already TRANSFORMED the lives of millions of people , Yoga. "
There is no denying the transformational & evolutionary aspect of the practice. For those who say that it is all an endorphin rush, I will have to disagree. I used to play tennis, badminton, squash & golf, and the closest feeling to "Yogic Bliss" I ever got was from surfing ; hence the yoga-surfing connection.
In this era of LCD ( Lowest Common Denominator ) US Yoga , ie: chanting using Bon Jovi's greatest hits on YouTube , instructors peppering their classes with profanities & blogs that emphasize the social & pedestrian vs. the classic & true , let's not forget tradition , transformation & gratitude.
" On the YGB website is a very interesting suggestion to help : yoga teachers around the world can join the project in a very simple & effective manner ; teaching in order to benefit Yoga Gives Back. The idea is a simple way to practice Karma Yoga ! "
*** Muito obrigado Tatiane. Grande abracao pela "post" : Yoga Brazilian Style a So Ham
I've been inspired to work on Urdhva Danurasana Drop Backs after watching a couple of my classmates perform theirs the past Saturday mornings . The hotel room door in Vancouver was my best friend this week, as it assisted me in walking my hands down towards the floor as prep .Seaph Antelmi of Ashtanga Boulder does some drop backs , Mysore style with some cool footage from Goa , India towards the end of the clip.
I've been listening to this insightful Coldplay tune in the car as prep for a trip to Vancouver next week. Whenever I get ready for a trip , I always think of my teachers as they are sources of strength, guidance and inspiration. This morning, I got to attend Joel Bender's Yoga Tradition class once again and in the afternoon , participated in John Sahakian's Breath , Movement & Balance workshop @ Exhale Venice. So I am ready for all the meetings next week ( & not feeling LOST either, hah ).
John has a new class coming up in mid-Sept ; Saturdays @ Noon : Yogis Anonymous , 2nd Street , Santa Monica.
