Zedemoura's HD vdo of Ipanema & Astrud Gilberto's voice will warm me up while I am in the freezing East Coast all of Jan. 2011. It is going to be a difficult choice to make ; whether to return to a familiar Brazil or embark on a new journey to India latter part of 2011. 2010 turned out to be a great year . Looking forward to an even brighter & blessed 2011. Cheers !
Via Ride The Breath Yoga is this overview of the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga. I did Mysore practice at my teacher's shala this morning ; and " Ride the Breath" is an appropriate metaphor for it. You can really hear your breath & explore asana with the teacher's guidance in the Mysore class format. Ekam Dve, Trini , Catvari , Panca -
Bhakti in practice signifies an active involvement by the devotee in Divine worship. It is often translated as "devotion" , though increasingly "participation" is being used as a more accurate rendering since it conveys a fully engaged relationship with the Lord.
At the noon aarti at the temple today , the nectar of bhakti was overflowing. The Indian devotees were in full attendance including the prabhu who led kirtan. The deities were festive in their holiday garments of red & green.
The bhajans were particularly moving as bhaktas from the temple took turns leading and moving everyone to chant the Maha Mantra with fervor.
I always think of my grandmother and aunt on Dec. 25th. My grandmother , who was supremely Catholic , had a chapel in her house. This meant there was no escape for any of the members of our family from having to attend Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. My motivation for attending the mass as a child was the prospect of opening all the presents after the "Noche Buena" meal.
I also think of my Tita Sonya , AKA "Tita Hippie Queen" , the original bohemian of the family , who had decamped from a "Stepford Wives" marriage in New Haven , CT and roamed the world with stop-overs in London & Corfu. She finally settled down in Toronto , where I visited for several Xmas holidays in a row when she was diagnosed with cancer. Being a child at heart , Christmas was her favorite time of the year.
So I prayed for them at the temple this afternoon , while knowing I was happy where I was , in the spiritual sky , with my spiritual family. Jaya !
Another warm email in my B'berry InBox before Morning Mysore today. " Hey P , it has been a while. How are you doing my friend ? Wanted to share with you the publication of my new book "The Guru in You " which is out on the 28th of Dec. I will be back in the States to promote it on the Ellen ( de Generes ) & Dr. Oz shows.I hope all is good with you and hope to catch up soon. Much love. " Please check out Cameron's site , www.theguruinyou.co or www.yogicameron.com for more information. His visits to India to study & immerse himself in traditional Ayurveda & yoga along with the subsequent transfomative journeys are narrated in the book. I had posted several years ago that it was after meeting Cameron in NY and listening to his take on vegetarianism that I took the plunge. There has been no looking back since then -
Kirtan or sankirtana was popularized in the 1500s by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The Sanskrit term , Kirtan, means to glorify in the association of others , or the congregational singing of divine mantras with Bhakti , devotion. Here is one of the sweet & transcendental moments captured in this clip from the recently concluded 24 Hr. Kirtana in Campina Grande , Brasil.
This was my view this afternoon as one of the sponsors of today's auspicious Bhagavad Ghita Yajna at New Dwarka Dhama .
The sponsorship is intended as a holiday present to honor my parents and also as a vehicle to support and give gratitude to the temple community.
Nirantara Dasa led us through the chanting of the 700 verses in Sanskrit while a fire yajna was performed. He described the Gita Jayanti as a spiritual "oil change " that would leave us feeling ecstatic after its 4 and 1/2 hours.
He was right. I consider it one of the most joyful events of the year. Listening to the slokas being chanted with so much bhakti & devotion was supremely transporting.
Thank you Mother Pavaka for all your arrangements & service. All glories !
Astaka refers to the number 8 , and Jagganath means " Lord of the Universe ".This particular song as interpreted by Shabda Hari Das consists of 8 verses glorifying the Lord of the Universe , Lord Jagganatha , Lord Krishna , originally uttered by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu 500 years ago. Dec. 8 , an auspicious day , is also the birthday of Vytas B. As they say in Brasil , Parabens V ! All the blessings . It has been 6 years since I took that first class with you. Abracos.
