I took this quick shot of Eddie Stern preparing for Friday night puja at Ashtanga Yoga New York / the Broome St. Temple a couple of weeks ago.
It was quite a blessing to be staying in a flat that was literally around the corner from Eddie's shala. I am also grateful that he gave me permission to drop-in on his weekend Mysore classes after mentioning my teacher's name via email.
AYNY provided balance & grounding for me whenever I had a chance to attend practice , ( especially in NYC where everything & everyone is moving a mile a minute ) either Eddie's Mysore or his wife Jocelyn's led class. They are both very gracious & dedicated teachers.
The AYNY website has an interesting feature posted on its opening page regarding an article from the New York Times about Andrew Vollo's class for NY cab drivers ( talk about those who go a mile a minute ) .
Here is an excerpt from the feature that resonates with me :
" Hats off to Andrew Vollo, for organizing a yoga class for NYC taxi cab drivers. While public school children, school teachers, doctors and nurses have several yoga outreach groups that attend to them, the service providers of NYC could definitely use some caring attention.
In the popular, consumeristic yoga culture of NY, it is refreshing to see an article in the NYT about yoga being used in such a simple and ‘unsexy’ way – while most of the recent yoga articles in the NYT seem to highlight the most unpleasant aspects of the yoga zeitgeist, there are indeed pockets of hope that the total annihilation of yogic principles is not as near at hand as it seems. "

Dhanyavad Eddie !
